St. Mary’s College C.S.Sp. will be presenting their thoughts on Mental Health in the National Public Speaking Project in December

Barry O’ Fiacháin will lead the team of Stephen Graham and Rowan Moorkins O’Reilly discussing their issues.

Although it is a competition, the emphasis is placed on the voicing of opinions, and speaking up. 65% of the Marks will be allocated for Content and 35% for presentation.

Leinster Conference EYP Ireland 2009

Well Done to the six guys from 5th Year who took part in the 2009 Leinster Regional Conference of the European Youth Parliament in Ireland.
The weekend consisted of Team Building, Charm, Essay Writing, Discussion, Team Work, Debating, Socialising, Public Speaking and absolutely NO APATHY. It was another fantastic conference for St. Mary’s, with contributions from all members, both in the resolutions and on the floor.
A big THANK YOU to all the Orga Team, and to everyone involved with EYP. The weekend was surely the finest showcase of all the hard work that has been put in.

Congratulations to Dáire, Fiachra, Rowan and Barry (5th Years) who collected 3 points in their first debate against Holy Child Killiney in the concern debating Competition. The motion was “The E.U. is failing Africa” the boys did well against in Daire’s words a “rather unlucky” HCK team. They battled hard to secure these points and now sit atop the table! Well done boys!

This week we will be attempting a new format with you guys!

On thursday bring a notepad and pen, and bring your arguments with you.

We will then teach you how to construct your arguments around the information you have!

Also…..hopefully on friday of this week or some day next week i will be able to deliver a lecture to you guys on debating skills, given to me last weekend at the L&H in UCD!

Thursdays motion is: This House Belives Ireland Made The Right Choice When It Came To Lisbon!

Notes not scripts, try lifting your head and making eye contact with your audience!
SPEAK UP!!!! we need to be able to hear you!
Take notes, you may be able to use them for rebuttal!
Stick to the topic please!
Debate strucuture is key, have a begginning middleand end of your speech!

The topic for next thursday is “This House Believes Ireland made the right choice on October 2nd in reagrd to the Lisbon Treaty!”

Please leave all Cóir posters at the door!

We proudly present the TalktoEU Essay Competition to You.

It is open to all age groups. There are 2 categories, Junior (1st to 3rd) and Senior (4th to 6th).

YOUr job is to write an essay responding to the following question:

“What is the European Union thingy doing for me?”

Less than 1000 words. Deadline is the 30th October. Talk to Fiachra (Class Captain) in Fifth Year, Mr. Sweeney or Mr. Fitzsimons if you want to enter. €25,000 worth of vouchers to be won.

Guest Speaker!

Due to some phone calls and questions and some help from a parent, Dáire O’Driscoll has made contact with TD George Lee. Mr. Lee has kindly agreed to visit us and speak with the debaters. We will inform you of the dates next week as this needs to be finalised with Mr. Lee. This is a huge opportunity so over the coming weeks we urge you to research some questions to ask when he arrives. We will post details on the notice board and website as soon as they have been finalised.
